With an eye on 2026, FIFA prepares a 48-team World Cup.

Three host nations, 48 teams, and perhaps more than 100 games. FIFA is getting ready to host the largest World Cup after successfully hosting the smallest one in history. The World Cup final on Sunday had hardly ended when talk went to the enormous number 2026 that was looming in the distance. The world's biggest football competition will take place for the first time in three different host countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The number of participating teams will more than quadruple from the existing 32 teams, which has been in existence since 1998, and the tournament will feature 48 teams, up from the current 32 teams.
