Ahead of the World Cup, Qatar has been under heavy criticism for its record on human rights, especially how it treats foreign laborers and how it views women's and LGBTQ rights.
By referring to homosexuality as a "injury in the psyche" in a German TV interview last week, Qatar's World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman triggered a firestorm of condemnation.
Germany-wide boycott calls have been made by spectators in stadiums. Lahm, 39, the tournament director for the Germany-hosted Euro 2024 finals, announced he will not be going to Qatar but rather watching the games on television.
"Homosexuals are still treated as criminals, women do not have the same rights as men, and press freedom and free speech are curtailed," he claimed.
