Switzerland beat Serbia 3-2 to reach last 16 of World Cup
Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 on Friday to move to the round of 16 for the third consecutive World Cup.Just after the break, the Swiss claimed second place in Group G with a goal from Remo Freuler. On Tuesday at Lusail Stadium, they will play Portugal.
Prior to Serbia's goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic, Xherdan Shaqiri gave Switzerland the lead early in the first half. Just before halftime, Breel Embolo equalized the score.
Following victories against Cameroon and losses to Brazil in its first two games, Switzerland needed to win to ensure its position in the knockout stage. Both the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 World Cup in Russia saw the team advance to the round of 16. To Argentina and Sweden, respectively, they each suffered 1-0 losses.
