Giving Qatar the World Cup was "scandalous," according to Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen declared in a statement that Qatar shouldn't have ever received the World Cup. FIFA's own audit studies concluded that it was the least suitable application for holding a World Cup. Seven of the new World Cup stadiums—out of the eight—were brand-new constructions. Qatar doesn't have a culture of football. For a possible World Cup host, that is a deal-breaker in our opinion. In addition to the "unacceptable working conditions" faced by migrant workers in Qatar as they assisted the nation in preparing to host the 32-team tournament, Leverkusen's statement also addressed widely reported problems with homophobia, a lack of freedom of expression, the denial of women's rights, and those issues.
The World Cup will rightfully be accompanied by questions about the host nation's human rights condition, equality, and freedom of expression, according to Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro. This event was awarded 12 years ago. Carro, who is on the board of the European Club Association, will travel to Qatar in December to attend a board meeting and discuss the issues brought up. "We must now try to make the World Cup award criteria substantially more open in the future. I'll run a campaign for it," Carro declared.
The team promised to provide updates on its members' performances at the World Cup. "We think it is impossible to hold the players accountable for Qatar receiving the competition 12 years ago. Therefore, they have our respect and our backing," Leverkusen stated. The competition has previously received criticism from league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hoffenheim. Gladbach stated that it will only provide little coverage of its own players, whereas Hoffenheim stated that it will refrain from providing any coverage in opposition to the "human rights abuses and discrimination against homosexuals in the dictatorial Gulf state." In the weeks before the Bundesliga's winter break, supporters staged extensive protests against the event in stadiums throughout Germany.
