Football legend Pele has died at the age of 82
Pelé, one of soccer's all-time greats and a pivotal figure in 20th-century sports who attained a level of world fame few athletes have achieved, passed away at the age of 82 on Thursday in So Paulo.Pele, widely regarded as one of the all-time greatest players, is the only person to have won the World Cup three times, having led Brazil to victories in the 1958, 1962, and 1970 competitions. He also took home the Golden Ball for best player at the 1970 tournament.
The first of those saw then-17-year-old become the youngest player to play in a men's World Cup, however Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland later broke his record. He is believed to have scored 1,283 goals in 1,363 senior appearances for clubs and his country over the course of a 21-year playing career, albeit that statistic is disputed because it included friendlies and tour games that weren't officially sanctioned.
The great won three World Cups with Brazil, in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Upon hearing of his passing, the sports world sent condolence messages to his family from all around the world.
