Argentina beat Australia 2-1 in the round of 16 to set up quarter final vs Netherlands.

With his first goal in the World Cup knockout round, Lionel Messi scored in his 1,000th professional game, helping Argentina advance to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Australia. Australia was only down one goal at the break, but when Ryan was tripped up by Rodrigo De Paul and Julian Alvarez finished into an open net, it appeared that Australia's fragile hopes had been dashed. However, Australia responded as Aziz Behich's attempt was blocked by Enzo Fernandez and went in. Then, as Argentina struggled to hold on to the victory, Behich was denied a magnificent solo goal by a superb Lisandro Martinez block. Even Emiliano Martinez had to make a last-ditch stop to save Garang Kuol from scoring.
Argentina will face Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
